EU residency for your family, for seven days a year in Portugal.

Portugal's Golden Visa gives your family a residence permit without moving. Permanent residence comes at year five and the option of citizenship at year ten. This winter, Plural is personally guiding ten American families through it. The next batch opens in 2027.

The investment is a regulated fund, not a property purchase.

The Golden Visa requires €500,000 subscribed in one or more Portuguese investment funds regulated by the CMVM, Portugal's securities regulator. The amount can be split across funds, and Plural manages both kinds.

Closed-ended funds

Invest for the fund's term

The fund owns and runs real businesses and assets, such as solar energy facilities in Portugal and Spain, and returns capital when it sells them. Some distribute yearly income along the way.

Open-ended funds

Weekly liquidity if your plans change

The fund holds Portuguese and US sovereign and corporate bonds, with weekly liquidity windows and no lock-up. You can take your money out in any week, subject to the fund's exit terms.

5 years

The immigration rule. To keep the Golden Visa, AIMA requires the €500,000 to stay invested in Portuguese regulated funds for at least five years. Money in an open-ended fund can still be withdrawn, but taking it below that amount before year five means the residence permit no longer meets the requirement.

Many families also buy a home in Portugal so they can come whenever they like. That purchase is separate and can sit alongside the fund investment; since 2023 it no longer counts toward the Golden Visa itself.

One investment, four milestones, no move required.

Month 0 to 1

Invest and file

You subscribe €500,000 in eligible funds. A Portuguese immigration lawyer files one application for the family.

Year 1

Residence permit

After a biometrics visit to Lisbon, cards are issued for you, your spouse, children under 26 and dependent parents.

Year 5

Permanent residence

With the investment held and renewals done, the family can apply for permanent residence. The five-year holding period ends here.

Year 10

Citizenship option

Under the 2026 nationality law you can apply for Portuguese citizenship after ten years of legal residence, including a basic language test.

Questions we hear first

Do I have to move to Portugal?

No. You spend on average seven days a year in Portugal: at least 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each two-year period after that. The rest of your life stays in the US.

Is this a real estate investment?

No. The €500,000 is a subscription to regulated Portuguese investment funds. You can still buy a home in Portugal, and many families do, but that purchase is separate and doesn't count toward the Golden Visa.

Can I take my money out if my plans change?

Yes, in an open-ended fund with weekly liquidity, subject to its exit terms. Keep in mind that the Golden Visa needs €500,000 invested in Portuguese regulated funds for five years; withdrawing below that before year five means the permit no longer meets the requirement.

What does it cost beyond the €500,000?

Plan on a Portuguese lawyer (roughly €6,000 to €7,000 for the main investor's initial application, plus smaller fees per family member) and AIMA government fees (roughly €7,000 per person for the first card, then renewal fees every two years). Fund fees depend on the fund; we cover them on the call.

How long does it take?

Your paperwork usually takes a few weeks. AIMA's processing has been slow in recent years and varies. We plan every file conservatively, and your lawyer gives you a current estimate before you commit.

Who can be included?

Your spouse, children under 26 and dependent parents can be on the same application.

How is this taxed in the US?

As a US person you stay taxable in the US on worldwide income. Portuguese funds usually carry specific US reporting, such as PFIC and FBAR rules. We prepare a brief for your own tax advisor. Plural doesn't give tax advice.

Why only ten places?

Each family gets a dedicated contact from the first call to the residence card. Ten is the number we can serve at that standard this winter. The next batch opens in 2027.
